ABOUT:
A D.S.C (Digital Signature Certificate) is a secure digital key that is issued by the certifying authorities for the purpose of validating and certifying the identity of the person holding this certificate. Digital Signatures make use of the public key encryptions to create the signatures. FEATURES OF D.S.C: All the documents filed by companies, LLPs that come under MCA 21 e-governance project need to file such documents using digital signatures. Such a signature must be affixed by the person who is authorized to do so. Digital Signature is used to sign electronic records such as e-forms etc. Digital Signature Certificates (DSC) are like physical certificates, the difference is DSC is in digital or electronic form and Physical certificates is in paper form. Documents that are signed digitally cannot be altered or edited after signing, which makes the data safe and secure. DSCs issued by the Certified Authorities are usually valid for one or two years. The request for a renewal of DSC should be made not less than 45 days before the expiry for the validity period for the DSC.
CLASSES OF D.S.C:
Class 3 Certificates: These certificates are used in online participation/bidding in e-auctions and online tenders anywhere in India. The vendors who wish to participate in the online tenders must have a Class 3 digital signature certificate.
FORMS OF DIGITAL SIGNATURE CERTIFICATE: DIGITAL SIGNATURE CERTIFICATE IS OF TWO FORM,
1) SIGN
2) ENCRYPTION
SIGN: The sign DSC is used only to sign the documents.
ENCRYPTION: Encrypted Digital Signature Certificate is used to encrypt a document, The Encrypted Digital signature certificate is fit for e-commerce documents. legal documentation, sharing of documents that are confidential and also contain information that is to be protected.
SIGN & ENCRYPT: Sign and Encrypt are useful for both signing as well as encrypting, it is convenient for the users to authenticate and maintain the confidentiality of the information that is shared.

IS DIGITAL SIGNATURE AVAILABLE IN SOFT COPY?
No. Digital Signature is available in soft format. The CCI has formally discontinued the download of DSC in .pfx format. So, the digital signature can now be downloaded only to a Cryptographic Device.

The Central Government of India has appointed the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA) under the Information Technology Act 2000 for regulating the issue and management of Digital Signatures in India.
WHAT IS CERTIFYING AUTHORITY?
The Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA) appoints independent agencies as Certifying Authority (CA) for the issue of Digital Signature Certificates. CAs are responsible for the verification and issuance of DSC to applicants.
WHAT IS RA (REGISTRATION AUTHORITY)?
Registration Authority (RA) interacts with the DSC applicants for collection of documents and submission to CA and help them for submission of DSC application and in some cases for obtaining and using hardware Crypto device
CAN A PERSON HAVE TWO D.S.C?
Yes. A person can have two digital signatures, say one for official use and another one for personal use.
